  • If you see something suspicious in your neighbourhood - report it.
  • Just use your last name and your initials on mailboxes, in the phone directory and on your building directory.  Especially if you're female, don't attention to the fact that you live alone
  • Always keep your doors and windows locked.
  • Use a one-inch deadbolt, heavy duty safety chain and wide angle door viewer.
  • Remember not to unlock the safety chain when someone comes to your door until you choose to let them in.
  • When you move into a new house or apartment, get the landlord to change the locks or do it yourself.
  • If you lose your key or your purse is stolen, change the locks.
  • Always ask for and inspect the ID of anyone your don't know who is looking to get you to open the door and do it BEFORE you undo the security chain
  • Keep interior and exterior lights on.
  • Install security lighting and cameras in your driveway, backyard and close to the doors. Pay attention to dark, corners.
  • If you're home looks like it has been broken into, don't go in.  Go to a neighbor and call the police.
  • On the phone, never tell anyone that you're alone.
  • Don't get on an elevator with someone even remotely suspicious. 
  • Don't use the stairwell in your apartment if you're alone.
  • If you're going out of town, make arrangements for your house to look lived in. Either stop your mail/newspapers or have a reliable neighbor pick them up.
  • Make sure that your closest neighbors know that you're going to be away
  • if you have children be sure to use a swimming pool alarm.
