Let it Snow

As dry, warm streets turn to icy messes it may be time to throw in the towel and admit that winter is upon us.  Most people remember to turn off the air conditioner and put away the garden hose, but one of the most important things to winterize is often overlooked - your automobile.  I don’t mean that people forget to tune up the car and throw in the snow tires.  What people forget is to haul the golf clubs out of the trunk and make sure you’re carrying an Emergency Kit.

During the cold winter months, it is essential to your safety that you carry a survival kit in your vehicle.  A typical kit has everything you need in the event of an emergency and includes food and water, light and communication devices, such as a radio or whistle and products for warmth and signaling.  A full first aid kit should be included for use in the event of injury.  These kits can be surprisingly compact and inexpensive.  Make sure you have one in your vehicle this winter - it could save your life.

Fires In Montecito Remind Me That We Need A Plan

Like so many other people today I've followed the developing story of the fires in Southern California in a state of semi- shock - although Heaven only knows why.  It's hot. It's dry and the winds can whip the fire into a frenzy in almost no time, but I just don't expect to see if happening so close to people I know.  I wonder about my brother who lives all too close and I think of those winding, crowded roads that twist through so many houses climbing up the hills around L.A .  They almost make me feel claustrophobic - as lovely as they are.

It's the speed with which they're spread and how quickly "It can't happen to me" can change into "Get Out Now!"  Few of us think clearly in a real emergency and so planning is incredibly important - Hah- This from one of the World's All Time Worst Planners - But it doesn't mean I can't help other people be smarter than I am.

On this page Emergency Kits is a form that anyone can fill in and receive by email a free copy of the Family Emergency Plan, which is a very simple, template  that you can use to make sure that in the event of an emergency - all your thinking has been done ahead of time.

We cannot ship Pepper Sprays to Canada.

Here is a short summary of Pepper Spray Laws in the United States

In Washington DC - Possession of pepper spray must be registered with the DC Metropolitan Police
Massachusetts- Pepper spray can only be sold by a firearms dealer
New York - Pepper spray can only be sold by a firearms dealer or a pharmacist and the seller must keep a record of the sale

Only Michigan approved spray can be shipped to Michigan.  Dog and bear repellants can also be shipped to Michigan and to New York.  Animal Repellant Spray is also legal thoughout the United States, the only pepper spray that is legal in Canada is for animals - dogs and bears.

In TEXAS?

An earthquake struck Texas today. Early reports talked about a quake in Northern Texas.  Later they evolved to a 3.0 magnitude quake in a Dallas  suburb and now I'm reading about a 3.7 Magnitude Quake near San Antonio!

When I think of earthquakes, I don't think of Texas as a hotbed of seismic activity.  I'll bet a lot of Texans don't either and that makes this event doubly shocking.  Maybe with the Tornado season past the the Hurricane season drawing to a close there was some thought that just maybe it was ok to let your guard down.  Well- here's the truth we don't want to see - It's NEVER ok to let you guard down- at least not when it comes to knowing that your family is prepared to face the unexpected.  Don't be caught without food or water or a plan.  FEMA and Safety Canada both endorse the concept of a Family Emergency Plan.

If you're one of the Dallas residents rudely shaken out of your complicity this morning, maybe you'd like to investigate the idea of a Family Emergency Plan and Family Emergency Kit.

Choosing a Taser or a Stun Gun

If you’re already in the market for a self defense product and you’re trying to decide whether to purchase a stun gun or a taser because you think they’re both pretty much the same, here are some points you’ll want to consider.

By far – what people are most interested in are the range of the weapons and the price.  Naturally to get one, you give up the other.  You can purchase a stun gun for under $100.00 even a cell phone stun gun. In fact you need to hunt to find a stun gun for more than $100.00.  A taser starts at $299.00 for a C2 Taser without laser sighting.  And a taser cartridge which holds two shots is about another $50.00.  But if you choose to buy a taser, you have a self defense weapon that you can use from 15 feet away.  If you’re not a big person, that’s an important point.

A stun gun is a contact weapon, so you must understand that by the time you can use it on someone they are close enough to possibly take it away from you.  For smaller people, especially women this is an important point.  You have two effective tools options to compensate for that.  The first is stealth – many of the stun guns are very small and some are actually disguised as other things – like cells phones – so it’s entirely possibly ( and I would say necessary)  to hide your intention to use a stun gun.  The second tool is the emergency strap.  If the gun is pulled from your hands, the strap will come loose and disable the weapon.  You won’t have any self defense weapon left, but at least it can’t be used on you while disabled.

New Product Line Comes to Your Best Defense

When Your Best Defense was started it was with a vision to provide products and information that would help women lead safer lives.  As the site has evolved, the products offered and some of the writing has evolved along with it to talk a little more about average people and families and not just women.

I confess,  some parts of the self defense products market are so  overwhelmingly macho, that the original targeting was probably a bit of an over compensation.  The truth is that  anyone can benefit from information about self defense, personal safety and home security.  The information and products we offer will continue to grow as new areas that affect safety are brought into the fold - so to speak.  And as of October 25/08 we're very excited to announce that Your Best Defense is now a distributor for Guardian Survival Gear.

Look for products like family emergency kits, go bags, child emergency bags, first aid and survival gear.  We have some up now, but this list will continue to grow.   We really hope that these products will meet the needs of our customers - past- present and future.
